“Much like the snowpack melting off the Sierra Nevadas into the one-way terminal Truckee River, those six words are a rite of passage for our group, the Reno Ruffians (a self-glossed band of brothers; brothers, uncles, cousins, family friends, and newly anointed besties sharing the world of college hoops and sports betting each spring).
For twenty plus years, our brotherhood has descended upon the WorldMark Reno in the state of Nevada to immerse ourselves in the NCAA basketball tournament; the 'big dance’ better known as 'March Madness.’
A trip that used to be done out of technological necessity (it takes 115 seconds to walk from WorldMark Reno’s second-floor rooftop barbecue to place a bet at the Sands) is now more of a ritual or holiday.
At WorldMark Reno, you are allowed six adults in a two bedroom suite. My Dad has been a regular in the master suite (which has its own bathroom and TV). He is master of the suite for a couple of reasons: his ability to pick winners in college hoops and his world-famous chili. We feel the official scents of March Madness are volatiles of cumin, onions, and garlic. All of us use the well-equipped kitchen and stove, depending on what times the games tip off. With games from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., sustenance has to be convenient.
The WorldMark staff has been more than phenomenal to our group. We notice there is very little turnover, indicating the happiness they exude is authentic. Many remember us from over 15 years ago!
Despite this being a trip we all cherish and look forward to, it is a business trip. WorldMark Reno allows us to collaborate and talk strategy. This could be on the deck of the barbecue patio while enjoying a view of the downtown skyline (see photo), or in the spacious, well-designed rooms. There is a computer and printer along with an additional big screen TV in the spacious lobby to supplement our handicapping needs.
Over the years, we have traveled to Reno by planes, trains, and automobiles. We usually don’t have a car; there are a half-dozen sportsbooks and casinos within walking distance, and the city bus line picks you up directly in front of the condos. A grocery shuttle runs twice a day to keep the group stocked up.
If you want to put spring into motion, head to Nevada and all the WorldMark Reno has to offer. Not only are the sportsbooks ready to take action and televise each game, Reno is a beautiful community with many ancillary activities for our group. We have enjoyed warm spring river walks along the Truckee, marquee shows at the local casinos, and even got up to ski Tahoe one year.
Much like the Zags punching a ticket to the tournament each March, you can count on the WorldMark Reno to be your ‘One Shining Moment.’”
